In late 1974, Barry Stace and Rob Allen put out the call to the local crew with a plan to run a contest with a field of 18 surfers. However when 34 people turned up to the meeting, they quickly realised they had something special in the making.
What was initially intended as a one-off small contest became the foundation of the oldest boardriders club in the Illawarra. And so, Woonona Boardriders was born. In it's inaugural year of 1975, the club had over 100 members; and over the course of the next 3 decades the club enjoyed great success at local, state and national level. |
In 2003, following several years of dwindling participation, the club underwent a rejuvenation period under the leadership of life member Paul Charlton, Ben Starr, Josh Skipp and Ben Apps. This new found energy attracted new members and sponsors alike.
Today the club continues to thrive with a membership base of over 150, and with such a focus on junior participation, the club is looking in great shape for many years to come as the next generation of young stars light up Woonona on a regular basis and continue the clubs proud history.
The club encourages and welcomes participants of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. Whether you're looking to quench your competitive thirst or simply wanting take part in a friendly heat with like-minded surfers, we hope you'll add your name to the list this year.
